The Kurdistan Region’s Independent Human Rights Commission has called on the public prosecutor to take legal measures against a company that imported shoes with an image of the Holy Cross on its soles to the Region.

The commission sent a communiqué to the head of the public prosecutor’s office on Monday (December 23), registering its protest against the shoes, saying that a number of Christians had filed complaints about them.

“It is an insult to the Christian religion and it is contrary to the coexistence and unity that exist in the Kurdistan Region,” the communiqué said.

The human rights commission added that the relevant institutions in Erbil had launched an investigation.

“In order to avoid the reoccurrence of this matter and to prevent some people from damaging the coexistence of religion in the Kurdistan Region, we call on you to take legal measures against the person and the company that is behind the incident,” the Commission said.
